Starting swimming lessons is an exciting milestone for your child. However, even if you’re a swimmer yourself, it is not always obvious what to pack for your child’s swimming lessons. Don’t stress! Here is our practical packing list that ensures your child starts swim lessons safely and comfortably all without the last-minute panic.
Before the Swimming Lesson
Having the right baby or child swimming lesson essentials reduces stress and helps keep the focus on learning. Here are what to bring before each class.
1. Swimming costume
The first thing to think about when taking your child to swimming lessons is what to wear. A proper swimming costume helps a child move freely in the water and ensures comfort. For a girl, a snug swimsuit that does not slip off the shoulder is ideal. Meanwhile, a swimsuit or swim shorts paired with a fitted rash vest works well for a boy. Avoid loose clothing, as it can weigh them down and make swimming challenging.
2. Slip-on shoes
Poolside areas can be slippery, so slip-on shoes are important for safety. Crocs or similar shoes with good grip are ideal. Avoid thongs, which can easily slip off and increase the risk of falls.
3. Swim cap (optional)
A swim cap may not always be required, but it makes lessons smoother. For children with long hair, swim caps help keep their hair out of their face. This prevents distractions and helps them swim faster.
Those with short hair can also find them useful, as they enhance comfort and reduce drag. As swim teachers, we recommend silicone caps as they are extremely durable, comfortable and stretch easily.
4. Water & healthy snacks
Staying hydrated and having enough snacks on hand is a must before and after swim classes. Therefore, carrying light snacks, such as fruit, yogurt, or a sandwich, prevents them from going to class on an empty stomach. Eating a small snack 15-30 minutes before class helps prevent discomfort during the lesson. Meanwhile, bringing a bottle of water ensures they are hydrated throughout the session.
5. Swim nappies (optional)
If you are wondering about what to take to swimming lessons for your baby, swim nappies are a must-have. Unlike normal nappies that can soak up water and become heavy, a swim nappy is designed to be worn in the pool. It is essential if your child isn’t potty trained, and helps contain accidents discreetly. This ensures hygiene and comfort for both your child and others during their lessons.
After the Swimming Lesson
Getting dry, warm, and clean is just as important as being ready before the swim. Here’s what to pack for swimming to keep your child comfortable after the lesson.
1. Towel
A towel is an essential item to pack in your swimming bag. This will keep your little one warm and dry after their lesson. Hooded towels are particularly handy for younger children. Don’t forget one for yourself if you’re entering the pool too.
2. Extra clothes
Always pack a full change of clothes, such as underwear, a breathable top, and easy-on bottoms on your packing list. Dry layers regulate temperature after pools and prevent post-lesson shivers.
3. Wet bag
A wet bag is a game-changer for keeping everything organised before and after swimming classes. For instance, a leak-resistant bag keeps post-lesson moisture and chlorine off everything else. You can seal a damp towel, and a swimming costume in the main pocket, and travel-size shampoo or body wash in a separate sleeve. If possible, choose a large wet and dry bag with multiple sections, a hanging loop, and a name label.
