The current Shapland Swim Schools teaching pools have been developed over seven decades as the Shapland family learnt from leasing public pools, building indoor aquatic centers and using outdoor school pools.
In 1973 Bernie Shapland, who at that time had been involved public pool leases and working in a school pool environment for 26 years, built the first of the Shapland teaching pools at 26 Hill Parade, Clontarf. Bernie understood the need for a teaching pool to have a variety of depths in order for toddlers to rapidly adjust to being in a water environment. The original pool had five different depth of water including a deep end essential for making sure pupils were very relaxed when they realized they could not touch the bottom.
With the first Shapland franchise opening at Kallangur in 1992 Chris Shapland saw an opportunity to add another three different depths to the teaching pool. It is that design, which is used in all Shapland Swim Schools, opened since 1992.
The unique pool design means our teachers can find the right depth or water for any age group to help them be safer in the water for the rest of their lives.
